Produced by the Neo-Classical Chamber Ensemble and designed by Chao Chien-Ming Architects, the stage design for “Pursuing the Light Ahead – Into PAUL CHIANG” has been awarded the 2025 Good Design Award in Japan.
Following its receipt of the Platinum Award, the highest honor of the 2025 MUSE Design Awards, the Gold Award at the 2025 London Design Awards, and its shortlisting for the World Stage Design (WSD), the project has once again been recognized — this time by the Good Design Award.
“Pursuing the Light Ahead – Into PAUL CHIANG” draws inspiration from Paul Chiang’s paintings — including Notre-Dame de Paris, Hundred-Year Temple, Pisilian, and Silver Lake — transforming the artist’s creative philosophy into a new theatrical expression.
Design Issue :
The theme of “light” expresses a dialogue between spiritual space and the natural landscape. Within the dynamic, multilayered spatial composition, light, shadow, and performers move freely, flowing like musical notes. This creates the multiplicity of spatial layers and a sense of continuous extension that echoes Paul Chiang’s own words: “All of my works attempt to keep extending outward.”

This soundscape music-theatre production weaves together the artist’s creative work, spatial design, media art, and the theatrical design of a classical ensemble. Inspired by “light,” it initiates a dialogue between art and space, constructing a dynamic, multilayered environment where movement, music, and spatial purity converge.
The design reveals an interplay of music and visuality, space and time, bridging the vast abstraction of the artist’s imagery with the clarity of architectural space. Within the physical constraints of the stage, it evokes a pristine, boundless landscape—allowing the integrated languages of the arts to resonate with poetic depth and spiritual intensity.
